Nathaniel C. Bryant, whose death occurred in this city, on Saturday morning, Sept. 19th, was born in Maine, and appointed to the Naval Service in 1836 at the age of fourteen and attached to the sloop Erie, West India squadron, from 1838 to 1841. He subsequently attended the Naval School in Philadelphia in 1842-3, and then sailed upon the sloop Plymouth, Pacific squadron, 1843-5, where he was promoted to Passed midshipman, on the 29th of June, 1843. He was with the Pacific squadron during the Mexican war; commissioned a Lieutenant in 1850, and served with different squadrons until the opening of the Rebellion, when he was placed in command of the gun boat Cairo in 1862 and was in several engagements with the rebels. Commissioned as Commander, 16 July 1860, and promoted to a Captaincy, he subsequently retired, receiving half pay until the time of his death. He first visited this place in 1855, purchasing property here and entering land in this county. Was subsequently married to Mrs. Bryant at Charles City. He was a man of more than common intelligence, having a mind well stored by reading and observation. The funeral service took place from the Episcopal church, Sabbath afternoon. |
